INTENSIVISTS
Critical Care Specialists / Intensivists specialise in managing and treating patients with complex or life-threatening pathology, in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or High Dependency Unit (HDU). We are responsible for delivering complex care to these patients, as well as co-ordinating the multidisciplinary clinical teams needed to obtain successful outcomes for our patients.
LEVEL OF CARE
Critical Care Specialists / Intensivists are not a new speciality. The ICU environment is highly complex, stressful and requires specific training. All areas in medicine are increasing in complexity, patients are getting older and society demands better outcomes hence doctors are even more specialised.
EXPECTATIONS
The technical aspects of delivery of care are difficult to master because the technology is highly complex, the patients are the sickest and often the most complex to manage in the hospital. For the patients’ families, a visit to the ICU is extremely stressful and emotionally challenging. One of the most important parts of our job is dealing with that and making sure they are cared for and communicated to in a humane and dignified manner.
